Artist Alex Weinstein

31 03 2011

Recently I spent part of the day hanging out in the studio with artist Alex Weinstein. Alex is a painter and sculptor residing in Manhattan Beach, California whose work has shown in galleries worldwide.  His work has also been featured in publications such as the LA Times, Surfer’s Journal, and Elle Decor. Alex’s work could best be described as atmospheric and ethereal. It seems to hover and float in this mysterious “space”  between the concrete and the abstract. However, there is one thing that is clear, Alex and his work are deeply infused with the ocean.

Los Angeles Artist David Lloyd

11 10 2010

David Lloyd is a Los Angeles based artist who creates mixed media paintings and collages influenced by the ocean, surfing, and travel. Along with realism, superstition, and mysticism, David’s work juxtapozes these elements with a playful sense of escapism where he examines the intersection between the worlds of fantasy and reality. By bringing order to chaos, David’s visual aesthetic yields a harmonious sensibility from distressed and imperfect materials. You can see more of David’s art at the Pacific Surf Gallery in Cardiff or at the Sacred Craft Surfboard Expo!

Artist Susan Wickstrand and Art Brewer collaboration

8 06 2010

Documenting a few moments with artist Susan Wickstrand and legendary photographer Art Brewer. For their collaborative project, Art provided the primary images which Susan then collages with additional images, layers of paint, and finally an encaustic wax treatment. Featured subjects include Indonesia, Hawaii, and surfers such as Gerry Lopez and Dave Rastovich. The images, although iconic in and of themselves, are transformed as the pieces become complex visual narratives. These shots were taken in Art’s studio as he and Susan both “initial” each piece with their thumbprint and signature on verso.

High Pressure

14 04 2010

Here’s a few water shots from the other week when the high pressure set up a nice offshore flow. I got a call from Ryan Burch and met him down at Seaside Reef. We shot for about an hour or so. He was ripping on a Skip Frye twin he borrowed from Richard Kenvin. For this session, I swooped my daughter’s pink boogie board and shot off it instead of my normal free swim. I hope none of the bro’s were watching…

Urban Street

16 03 2010

This shoot was inspired by life on the urban street. Shot in downtown San Diego, grunge was infused with hints of beauty. We had a great team with hairstylist Gwendolyn Sneed, makeup artist KC Whitcamp, and styling by Chesley Tolentino! Thanks to Steve Thrailkill for assisting and our lovely models, Melissa, Rose, and Misha!
