Los Angeles Artist David Lloyd

11 10 2010

David Lloyd is a Los Angeles based artist who creates mixed media paintings and collages influenced by the ocean, surfing, and travel. Along with realism, superstition, and mysticism, David’s work juxtapozes these elements with a playful sense of escapism where he examines the intersection between the worlds of fantasy and reality. By bringing order to chaos, David’s visual aesthetic yields a harmonious sensibility from distressed and imperfect materials. You can see more of David’s art at the Pacific Surf Gallery in Cardiff or at the Sacred Craft Surfboard Expo!

Winter in California

21 01 2010

With talk of a mild El Nino, things were looking promising for surfers this winter in California. Great weather and plenty of north pacific storms created epic swells with perfect conditions. Local favorites like Swamis, Cardiff reef, and Blacks were the best in years. Can you say staycation! But as I write this, the weather has begun to change and the rains are arriving. It sure was good while it lasted!

Be sure to check out Cyrus Sutton on his hand planner and the frame grab from his mounted camera. Always a stoke to see new approaches to riding waves! Plenty of creativity and inspiration to be found on his site: Vimeo video clip with GoPro HD camera, click here.

The Drifter screening at Patagonia Cardiff

25 11 2009

Patagonia Cardiff hosted a packed house for the screening of Rob Machado’s new movie, The Drifter. Directed by Taylor Steele, the movie follows Rob on a personal journey through Indonesia where he finds world class surf. Rob also played a few sets with Jon Swift and signed a few autographs.  Nixon watches and a Wegener alaia surfboard were given away to a few lucky fans. As for the groms, well… they’re just plain stoked! Thanks to Devon Howard and the crew at Patagonia Cardiff for a great event!

Sacred Craft Surfboard Expo

13 10 2009

This weekend was the Sacred Craft surfboard Expo at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. The show was all about the surfboard and Dick Brewer, who is considered by many to be one of the most influential surfboard shapers of all time. Pat Rawson took the win in the Shape Off Challenge, beating out four other master shapers who also attempted to replicate one of Brewer’s boards circa 1972-73. Thanks to Scott Bass for producing a great show. A whole lot of stoke going on!

Hurley Pro Lower Trestles 9-19-09

21 09 2009

Ok so, my friend calls and says he has VIP access to the Hurley Pro event at Lower Trestles this weekend. Grab camera bag and go. For those that don’t know, the event brings some of the world’s best surfers to one of the best waves in Southern California. Lower Trestles is a high performance wave perfect for state of the art surfing. Australian, Mick Fanning beat Californian, Dane Reynolds, in the finals to claim victory and take home a check for the biggest prize purse in surfing history, $105 K. Kelly Slater ripped lowers as usual, but couldn’t find the waves in his semi-final heat to advance to the finals.
