Sacred Craft Santa Cruz

6 04 2011

“More than anything, Sacred Craft is a celebration of the surfboard – the philosophical icon of enduring youth. No other object stirs as much passion, as much stoke, and as much power”. The spring show held in Santa Cruz did not disappoint. Surfers packed the Rittenhouse Building in downtown Santa Cruz on a rainy weekend and feasted on freshly shaped surfboards, contemporary and retro models,  live shaping demos, surf art, and a chance to rub elbows with friends and legends. Local shaper Doug Haut was featured in the tribute to the masters shape-off competition. Local Ward Coffey took top honors over Wayne Rich, Steve Coletta, Mark Angell and Bob Pearson replicating Doug’s classic “bump” model.

Artist Alex Weinstein

31 03 2011

Recently I spent part of the day hanging out in the studio with artist Alex Weinstein. Alex is a painter and sculptor residing in Manhattan Beach, California whose work has shown in galleries worldwide.  His work has also been featured in publications such as the LA Times, Surfer’s Journal, and Elle Decor. Alex’s work could best be described as atmospheric and ethereal. It seems to hover and float in this mysterious “space”  between the concrete and the abstract. However, there is one thing that is clear, Alex and his work are deeply infused with the ocean.

Julie Goldstein, Artist

4 01 2011

Formerly of New York, artist Julie Goldstein, makes her home in Cardiff by the Sea, California where she takes inspiration from the ocean and her life experiences. Her work is characterized by a physical, almost masculine, dynamic in terms of materials and process, yet remains uniquely feminine in it’s subjects, colors, and aesthetic. This wonderful contradiction collides with her narratives, which are  infused by a colorful cast of characters such as heroines and villains, teamriders on surfboards, and pirates on the high seas. She has exhibited globally and her most recent show is on display at the Pacific Surf Gallery in Cardiff. Check out Julie’s work, where adventurous heroines swim and play in the sea while others escape on motorbikes…

Los Angeles Artist David Lloyd

11 10 2010

David Lloyd is a Los Angeles based artist who creates mixed media paintings and collages influenced by the ocean, surfing, and travel. Along with realism, superstition, and mysticism, David’s work juxtapozes these elements with a playful sense of escapism where he examines the intersection between the worlds of fantasy and reality. By bringing order to chaos, David’s visual aesthetic yields a harmonious sensibility from distressed and imperfect materials. You can see more of David’s art at the Pacific Surf Gallery in Cardiff or at the Sacred Craft Surfboard Expo!

Kid Creature

16 09 2010

Calvin is a 11 year old grom from Newport making big waves with his art and t-shirt designs. Kid Creature, as Cal’s brand is known, has a light and witty vibe featuring offbeat monster characters along with tongue-in-cheek tag lines. Having struggled with his own allergies, Cal has compassion for the youth of today who face similar obstacles. For this reason, Cal has chosen to donate ten percent of the profits from Kid Creature to benefit cystic fibrosis. Keep an eye out for Kid Creature and check ’em out at kidcreature.net!
