Come Hell or High Water – Screening at the Surfing Heritage Foundation

26 10 2011

Keith Malloy  screened his bodysurfing masterpiece, Come Hell or High Water,  last October at the Surfing Heritage Foundation in San Clemente, California. The film is a series of wave riding vignettes filmed in California, Hawaii, Tahiti and beyond. With this film, Keith proves that bodysurfing, and riding waves without a traditional surfboard, is a moving and poignant experience. The screening also featured an exhibit of artwork created on Enjoy Handplanes. I set up a virtual studio and grabbed a quick portrait of Keith.

Portrait of Surfer Magazine staff photographer, Todd Glaser

24 08 2011

I shot this portrait of Surfer Magazine photographer Todd Glaser at my home in Encinitas. Todd is a versatile photographer with great skills in the water. Incorporating water into the shot seemed to be quite appropriate. Check out his work at www.tglaser.com

Gary Stuber, Surfboard Laminator at Moonlight Glassing

14 04 2011

Created in 1979, Moonlight Glassing is a special sort of place where surfboards have been decorated, glassed, polished, and sanded for over 30 years. Understated and unpretentious, the factory has put the finishing touches on thousands of surfboards for pros such as Rob Machado and Taylor Knox and labels such as Channel Islands and the Campbell Brothers. They specialize in custom color, airbrush, pinlines, resin tint, channels and fin set-ups for seasoned veterans and backyard shapers alike. Gary Stuber is Moonlight’s laminator and is responsible for  applying the fiberglass to the shapers creation giving it both function and fashion. Gary is a master craftsman and has probably glassed more surfboards than anyone, which is no minor accomplishment.

Sacred Craft Santa Cruz

6 04 2011

“More than anything, Sacred Craft is a celebration of the surfboard – the philosophical icon of enduring youth. No other object stirs as much passion, as much stoke, and as much power”. The spring show held in Santa Cruz did not disappoint. Surfers packed the Rittenhouse Building in downtown Santa Cruz on a rainy weekend and feasted on freshly shaped surfboards, contemporary and retro models,  live shaping demos, surf art, and a chance to rub elbows with friends and legends. Local shaper Doug Haut was featured in the tribute to the masters shape-off competition. Local Ward Coffey took top honors over Wayne Rich, Steve Coletta, Mark Angell and Bob Pearson replicating Doug’s classic “bump” model.
